The idea for PFLAG began in 1972 when Jeanne Manford marched with her son, Monty, the precursor to today’s Pride parade. After many gay and lesbian youths ran up to Jeanne during the parade and begged her to talk to their parents, she decided to begin a support group, and the first PFLAG meeting was held on March 11, 1973. By 1980, PFLAG was distributing information to educational institutions and faith communities nationwide, establishing itself as a source of information for the general public. When “Dear Abby” mentioned PFLAG in one of her advice columns, PFLAG received more than 7,000 letters from families requesting information. In the 1990s, following a period of significant growth, PFLAG employed an Executive Director, expanded its staff, and moved to Washington, DC. PFLAG chapters in Massachusetts helped pass the first Safe Schools legislation. In 1993, PFLAG added the word "Families" to the name and added bisexual people to its mission and work. In 2014, the organization officially changed its name from "Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays" to PFLAG. The change accurately reflects PFLAG members, those PFLAG serves, and the inclusive work PFLAG has been doing for decades. She and her wife live in Danville and are raising their elementary-aged son. Krista holds a B.A. in Political Science and Feminist, Gender and Sexuality Studies from Stanford University, and a J.D. with a concentration in Public Interest Law from the University of California, Hastings College of Law. While in law school, she served as the Co-President of OUTLaw, the LGBTQ student organization, and she advocated for the rights of LGBTQ people while working at Positive Resource Center, Legal Aid at Work, and as the Tom Steel Fellow at Equality California. As an attorney, Krista served as the Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Legal Fellow and Program Director at OneJustice, building nonprofit capacity and connecting law students to pro bono work and public interest careers. Krista moved to Danville in 2014 and has served as the Greenbrook Mothers Group President, Greenbrook PTA’s Inclusion and Diversity Chair, Parliamentarian, and President. She will soon become the San Ramon Valley Council of PTAs Vice-President for Family Engagement after serving as the Council Inclusion and Diversity Chair for the last two years. She also sits on the Steering Committee of the San Ramon Valley Diversity Coalition, the San Ramon Valley Unified School District’s Culture and Climate Committee, and Equity Advisory Council. She dotes on her two kids and when one of them came out to her at the age of 10, she embraced them and became an passionate advocate in her community and at work. Along with her work at PFLAG, she has volunteered with Free Mom Hugs, Real Mama Bears, Art of Living, Human Rights Campaign and the Trevor Project. Her articles & speaking advocating for the LGBTQ+ community has been featured on many platforms, including San Ramon Diversity Coalition, Narika, BITS Pilani Engineering School, “Desi Moms”, and “Queer Story Time”. Anu is an Ayurvedic Doctor practicing traditional Indian medicine and writing & teaching at Kerala Ayurveda. She was on the DEI committee of the National Ayurvedic Medical Association and is a current member of GLMA (Health Professionals advancing LGBTQ+ equality). Her Ayurvedic Doctor research dissertation was on establishing best practices for LGBTQ+ health care in Ayurveda. Having struggled with their identity and orientation, Taylor pridefully draws on his experiences and past to advocate and educate for a world where people can live as their truest, honest selves. Their journey to PFLAG was through his parents, who had found support in PFLAG’s meetings and incredible resources after he came out. Taylor completed their undergraduate degree at UCLA with a Bachelor’s in Psychology and is currently pursuing their MFA in Interior Architecture and Design from the Academy of Art.
